Saint Thomas Health to host medical mission event in Nashville

NASHVILLE, TENN. – Aug. 14 2013 - As part of Saint Thomas Health’s commitment to serve the poor and vulnerable in Middle Tennessee, the five-hospital health system will host a free medical screening event in Nashville on Saturday, Sept. 21. 

The Nashville “Medical Mission at Home” event will be held at Holy Name Catholic Church Parrish Center, located at 508 Main Street in Nashville, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

Volunteer medical personnel, including, physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists, technicians, pharmacists and dozens of other hospital staff from Saint Thomas Hickman Hospital, Saint Thomas Hospital for Spinal Surgery, Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital, Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital and Saint Thomas West Hospital, will provide free medical, dental and optical check-ups, behavioral health care and spiritual care to Nashville residents most in need. Pharmacy services will be provided from the Dispensary of Hope. 

“It is our responsibility as a mission-driven ministry to care for the poor and vulnerable, especially in our own communities,” said Nancy Anness, vice president of advocacy, access and community outreach for Saint Thomas Health. “We are one healing community and through that we are able to provide services for those in our community who cannot afford to buy food or pay rent, much less afford to seek health care services on a regular basis." 

Nashville-Davidson County has approximately 624,496 residents. Only 77 percent of the adult residents are insured according to the Healthy Communities Institute: Healthy Nashville . More than 18 percent of residents are living below poverty level, according to the latest United States Census Bureau data.
