Saint Thomas West Hospital's Unity brain tumor system sees 100th patient
While brain tumors impact a small percentage of the population, this disease has a dramatic effect on patients, their wellbeing and their families.
A little more than a year ago, Saint Thomas Health launched its Unity System, the first fully-integrated brain tumor center of its kind in the United States, in order to provide a comprehensive approach to the treatment of brain tumors. Today, the system has treated 100 patients.
The Unity System includes a unique arrangement of leading edge technologies to seamlessly create a virtual operating room where physicians can join together and work in real-time as a unified team to determine the best treatment plan for that patient. Then, every week a team of 15 clinicians, including neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists, meets to discuss patients from a proactive perspective, not retrospectively, which allows for more efficient care coordination and better patient consultation.
In 2011, the brain tumor board of physicians at Saint Thomas Hospital reviewed more than 500 brain tumor cases, making them a leading brain tumor treatment site regionally and nationally. Since the Unity System launched in 2012, the group has continued to serve a large volume of patients while also revolutionizing the way those patients receive care.
Some additional successes of the Unity System since its launch are:
- The Unity System includes Tennessee’s first Adult Intraoperative MRI Hybrid Neurology operating room
- The system served as an investigational site for the DCVAX Tumor Vaccine Trial
Saint Thomas Health has a tradition of excellence in bringing the most advanced equipment and services to brain tumor treatment – the Unity System is a prime example of that.
Unity is the term that articulates the collaboration between the clinicians, the support of Saint Thomas Health administration and industry partners providing the enabling technologies.
