Lori Black, nutritionist at Saint Thomas West Hospital, gives a few fun facts about sugar substitutes.

  • Artificial sweeteners are characterized as intense sweeteners because they are actually many times sweeter than regular sugar.
  • Sucralose more commonly known as Splenda is 600 times sweeter than sugar
  • Saccharin known as Sweet-N Low is 300 times sweeter than sugar. Saccharin, like aspartame, is advised that pregnant women should not use it.
  • Aspartame also known as Equal and Nutrasweet is 200 times sweeter than sugar.
