SAINT THOMAS WEST HOSPITAL TO OPEN INNOVATIVE BALANCE KITCHEN IN CAFETERIA
-One of only two cafeterias in the country designed to promote healthy lifestyle choices-
Nashville, Tenn. – Nov. 11, 2013 – Saint Thomas West Hospital is proud to announce the opening of The Balance Kitchen, an innovative and visionary approach to teaching patients, employees and visitors about healthy eating habits and food options in the hospital cafeteria.
The Balance Kitchen, one of only two of its kind in the nation, supports the health and wellness goals of café visitors through a combination of culinary techniques, technology, and transparent nutrition information.
Designed to create an environment that fosters healthy and sustainable lifestyle choices, The Balance Kitchen offers full nutrition labeling on all items in café, with options that include brown rice; whole wheat bread, rolls, tortillas, pizza crust, pasta, and fruit and vegetable sides with all entrees and sandwiches. The Balance Kitchen even offers options for those with a sweet tooth, featuring heart healthy dessert choices daily.
Along with an online-accessible daily menu, The Balance Kitchen uses a suite of technology solutions to inform, educate and promote healthier choices in the café and extend the promotion of healthier lifestyle habits beyond the café to the home and family. The Balance Kitchen also engages a Carbon Foodprint calculator and toolkit, designed to measure progress in reducing the carbon footprint of café operations.
The Balance Kitchen opening celebration will be held at Saint Thomas West Hospital’s Parkside Café on Tuesday, Nov. 12, from 10: a.m. to 2 p.m. The ribbon cutting will be at 10:30 a.m., followed by free sampling and giveaways, including a bicycle and a Fit-bit activity measuring device.
