Dangers of Smokeless Tobacco
Millions of dollars are spent on anti-smoking campaigns, but one Saint Thomas Health doctor says the dangers of smokeless tobacco needs more attention. Dr. Brent Coil, a family practitioner at Saint Thomas West, says smokeless tobacco is just as harmful as smoking cigarettes and just as addictive. With the recent death of baseball Hall-of-Famer Tony Gwynn, who lost his long time battle to oral cancer after years of chewing tobacco, the topic is back in the spotlight. The risks of using smokeless tobacco include heart disease, gum disease, tooth decay, mouth lesions, and cancer.
