Wine Around the Square Brings Community Together, Benefits Women in Rutherford County
Wine Around The Square, a wine tasting event that benefits Saint Thomas Rutherford Foundation’s The Power of Pink, will be held Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014 from 6 to 9 p.m. around the downtown Square in Murfreesboro.
Last year, more than 850 people attended the event, raising more than $128,000 to bring diagnostic breast cancer services to Rutherford County women who are uninsured, underinsured or indigent. The funds provided mammograms for 529 Rutherford County women, 200 more women than the previous year.
“Last year’s event was so much fun,” said event co-chair Patty Marschel. “This year, we want to invite even more friends and neighbors from across Middle Tennessee to buy a ticket, come join in the fun, and help provide diagnostic breast cancer screenings for Rutherford County women who can’t afford these vital medical services on their own.”
The Murfreesboro downtown Square will be blocked off for the event. Guests will be able to stroll in and out of downtown businesses, enjoy food from participating vendors, choose from more than 75 wines and listen to live music. Each venue will be staffed with volunteers who will describe and pour wine for tasting before visitors proceed to the next station.
Participating bands include Frazier and Company with Chuck Mullins, John Armstrong Band, Johnny B and the Balladeers and the Murfreesboro Symphony Saxophone Quartet.
Dr. Susan Andrews, a local physician, is the 2014 event honoree. Dr. Andrews was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2013, the same week as her daughter’s wedding and just days before leaving for a long-awaited trip to New Zealand. This September, she will be seven months cancer-free.
“The Power of Pink committee really appreciates the support we’ve received from our city leaders in Murfreesboro,” said Anne Davis, Executive Director of the Saint Thomas Rutherford Foundation. “We share a similar vision of a family friendly event that brings our community together to support a worthy cause – thanks to their help, I am confident this year will be the best year yet.”
