A home for Sylvester: Construction begins on Saint Thomas Health Habitat for Humanity build
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- March 27, 2013 -- Construction began Saturday, March 23, on Saint Thomas Health's 2013 Habitat for Humanity house.
Volunteers worked along Sylvester McMillian, an associate of Baptist Hospital, as he realized his dream of home ownership.
McMillian joined Baptist Hospital as a floor technician in June 2011. He rides the bus to work and to the HomeWORKS classes required by Habitat for Humanity to prepare him for his upcoming homeownership.
He is not a first time applicant at Habitat for Humanity and to keep him motivated as he worked to be accepted into the program, he hung up a Habitat flyer in his current home.
His current home, in one of the roughest public housing communities in Nashville, is sparsely decorated as McMillian has been determined to make this residence only temporary. It’s not safe for his grandchildren to visit so he saved his money in preparation for his new house.
McMillian feels blessed with what God has given him and is grateful to the volunteers and sponsors who are helping him on his journey to becoming a homeowner. Sylvester will be working alongside volunteers each build day as his new home is built.
Constructions will continue through April 21 and McMillian is set to close on his new home in May.
