Saint Thomas Hospital rejoices in 115 years of service

This April, Saint Thomas Hospital celebrates 115 years of devotion to the physical, emotional and spiritual healing of Middle Tennessee. With a mission to serve all persons, with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable, Saint Thomas Hospital is focused on transforming the health care experience and helping people live healthier lives.

The History

In 1633, Saint Vincent de Paul and Saint Louise de Marillac founded the Daughters of Charity in Paris, France. In 1898, Thomas Sebastian Byrne, the fifth Catholic Bishop of Nashville, asked the Daughters of Charity to establish Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville. Ensworth, the home of Judge Joseph McGavock Dickinson on Hayes Street, was purchased for the new hospital.

The 16-room hospital opened its doors on April 11, 1898. In addition to private rooms, the house had been converted into wards, one with eight beds and others with two or four, for a total of 26 beds. It also included a kitchen, chapel, and living quarters for five sisters.

By the 1950s, it had grown to 333 beds and offered the area’s most advanced medical care. In 1974, the present 541-bed hospital opened and formed the core of the major medical campus that would be established over the next 30 years.

Saint Thomas Hospital joined Saint Thomas Health in 2002. The regional health system includes – Baptist Hospital, Saint Thomas Hospital and The Hospital for Spinal Surgery in Nashville, Middle Tennessee Medical Center in Murfreesboro and Hickman Community Hospital in Centerville – and a comprehensive network of affiliated joint ventures, medical practices, clinics and rehabilitation facilities. Saint Thomas Health is a member of Ascension Health, a Catholic organization that is the largest not-for-profit health system in the United States.
